Meet Liz Goss, 45, Oak Park
What do you do when you're off your mat?
I'm a principal at a school in Chicago and a mother to a 16 year old - both reasons to do lots of yoga.
What brought you to Ahimsa for the first time?
I was searching for ways to slow down my brain.
What's your favorite thing about this studio?
Ahimsa is so welcoming. I've had over 15 different teachers and each one is wonderful. I hear them in my head all the time giving me important life reminders like: "Be grateful when things go your way and be grateful when things do not." "I see the light in each of you." "Make it a moving meditation." "Remember your intention." "This too shall pass." "Focus on the breath."
What is your favorite type of yoga class (hatha, yin, vinyasa, etc.) and why?
Any class that fits my schedule is my favorite.
What's your advice for someone coming to yoga for the very first time?
Stay on your mat - don't worry about anyone else.
What has your practice given you?
It has given me a way to stay present in my life and calm my overactive brain.
What's your favorite pose?
Warrior II. I feel strong and focused.
What's your least favorite pose?
Pigeon. My hips were not made for it.
Tell us something unusual about yourself?
I wake up at 4:37 almost every morning even though my alarm is set for 5:45.
What 3 words would a good friend use to describe you?
Thoughtful, empathic and dedicated
What's your guilty pleasure/s?
Project Runway - I tend to discover shows way late, but I'm finding "Make it work" a useful mantra. And chocolate.
Have you made any changes in your life as a result of your yoga practice?
I am more intentional in my responses to stressful situations and breathe more mindfully. I find ways to be present more often.
