Ahimsa Oak Park Student Spotlight: Zoe

Meet Zoe, 25, Oak Park

Zoe is an incredible person - and we would know because she is a part of our workstudy program and recently complete Ahimsa’s Teacher Training. We are honored to have her be the student spotlight!

What do you do when you're off your mat?
Exercise, housework, hang out with family and my boyfriend!

What brought you to Ahimsa for the first time?
My friend who worked work study at the time.

What's your favorite thing about this studio?
Originally I fell in love with the proximity and variety of classes and teachers, but I really love the space and students whom are drawn to the studio. The community is very loving and open.

What is your favorite type of yoga class (hatha, yin, vinyasa, etc.) and why?
Hatha! Especially Iyengar. The slow pace with longer holds while keeping certain muscles engaged physically and mentally challenges my strength, flexibility and mind.

What's your advice for someone coming to yoga for the very first time?
Try a lot of different classes from a lot of different teachers to find what you need mentally and physically.

What has your practice given you?
Control, calmness, and a constant desire to be a better person all the time.

What's your favorite pose?
Lizard (especially any variations!)

What's your least favorite pose?
Full pigeon (Half pigeon is cool)!

Tell us something unusual about yourself?
I'm half hispanic and polish, and can speak Spanish, but not Polish.

What 3 words would a good friend use to describe you?
Caring, busy, and goofy.

What's your guilty pleasure/s?
Video games, binge watching harry potter, and sweets!

Have you made any changes in your life as a result of your yoga practice?
I now practice meditating, stretching specific muscle groups before exercising, scheduling at home yoga classes, and awareness in all moments (it's easy to run on auto-pilot, yoga helped break me away from that).

If you were having a dinner party and could invite anyone you wanted, who would they be?
Ella and Louis Fitzgerald, my great grandmother (I heard we would have gotten along spendidly), all of my living family and friends, Mr. Rogers, MLK jr., Ghandi...ultimately, people of peace, positivity, and love.
